What Is a Feral Cat?

Usually born in the wild, a feral cat lives outdoors with little human interaction. Feral cats are typically more fearful and difficult to handle than stray cats, which mostly have been lost or abandoned.

While some stray cats can exhibit feral behavior if they are homeless for a long period of time, most scared cats are wrongly labeled as feral cats.

Rescuing and Moving a Feral Cat

The most common method to capture and rescue a feral cat is to lure it into a drop trap using strong-smelling foods. Once trapped, cover the trap with a piece of fabric to calm the animal while moving it. Transferring the cat to its final location can be a bit more difficult, as some cats get aggressive during this process. Be careful and use common sense.

Our training program explains in detail how to transfer aggressive cats from a drop trap cage to their final location in a safe manner. It also suggests good traps to use and where to buy them. How to Socialize a Feral Cat: Step-by-Step

Create a Safe Space for the Cat

Before socializing any feral or stray cat, you’ll need a small, enclosed area, for it to feel safe. A large crate setup or a closed bathroom will work. Add a comfortable bed or blanket, food and water dishes, and a litter box. This area reduces hiding spots while also giving the cat a sense of security. Make sure there are no loud noises or abrupt movements in the vicinity to make the cat feel safe.

Use Food to Establish Trust

One of the most effective methods for taming a feral cat involves food. Set a consistent time to feed the cat indoors and stay with it during its meal. If the cat is too scared, use wet foods or treats to lure it. Both tuna and salmon always work.

Act Calm and Non-Threatening

Steer clear of direct eye contact and take your time when you’re close to the cat at the beginning. Speak softly or blink slowly. Give the cat free reign to watch you. This lays the groundwork for getting a feral cat to trust you. Consider that cats can sense your emotions. It’s important that you trust the process.

Be Gentle When Petting the Cat

Introducing touch to scared cats, especially mature ones, can be challenging. To ease the process, slowly reach with your index finger so the cat can smell it and wait for its response. Feral cats will act extremely scared and frisky. If the cat reaches its nose out to smell your finger for a few times, you can start gently petting it with your index finger then gradually with your hand over time.

Be Patient, Especially when Interacting with Adults

Although feral cats can typically be socialized in two to eight weeks, some feral cats may require a little more time to socialize while some come out of their shell within one week. . After  socialization, some will act skittish around strangers, while others won’t. Stay calm and patient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tame an adult feral cat?

Yes, but it takes more patience and time compared to kittens. Over time, a lot of adult ferals can adapt to indoor environments or develop affection.

How long does it take to tame a feral cat?

The cat’s history, personality, and age all play a role. Adult cats may need more time to react than kittens. Some adult cats come out of their shell in the first week.  Move at the cat’s pace at all times and closely follow our video training.

What’s the difference between a stray and a feral cat?

Most stray cats eventually become feral or scared cats after they’ve been outside too long and lost their sense of familiarity with human touch. Additionally, most feral cats aren’t fixed, which makes them more aggressive. Once they’re fixed, they become tamer and nicer in the process.
